Democracy

Rule of Law

Individual Liberty

At Derby Pride Academy democracy is taken very seriously. Students are actively encouraged to have a voice and share their views and opinions regularly through various mediums, using the student ambassadors, but also in meetings and discussions. Student voice ideas and vote on issues. In addition, mock elections run in PSHE, with students learning how a ballot box works. Tutor time activities embed the skill of debating whilst engaging students in topical issues from around the world.

The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the academy, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout the academy day, as well as when dealing with behaviour and at academy meetings. Students are taught: the value and reasons behind laws; that they govern and protect us; the responsibilities that this involves; and the consequences when laws are broken.

Our Behaviour policy is discussed on induction, referred to regularly and consistently upheld.  Students are aware that for inappropriate behaviours, there are consequences. Parents are kept informed of their child’s behaviour. Visits from authorities such as the Police and links with the PCSOs help reinforce this message.

Within the academy, students are actively encouraged to make decisions and choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As an academy we educate and provide boundaries for young children to take risks and make choices safely. Students are encouraged to understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms, and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through events such as Safer Internet Day.

In addition, students are encouraged to involve themselves within community life. We hold fund raising events, to support local and national organisations.

Mutual Respect

Tolerance

Mutual respect is at the heart of our values; a key expectation that forms part of our ethos. Students learn that their behaviours have an affect on their own rights, and those of others. All members of the academy community are encouraged to treat each other with tolerance and respect.

Derby Pride Academy are situated in areas which are culturally diverse, therefore we place a great emphasis on promoting diversity with our students. We have planned to address this issue either directly or through the inclusion of stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures. Our PSHE teaching, reinforces this.
